5 Best Tips for Effective Parenting

One of the toughest jobs out there is parenting! There is no manual, no rules, you just have to keep going, making mistakes along the way and learning from them. Not to forget, it’s one of the most fulfilling experiences for every parent.

In order to become an empathetic, caring and compassionate individual, a child needs to learn these skills early in life. Cultivating these skills into a child is an important aspect of effective parenting. After all, the things taught in childhood shape the personality of a person.

While there is no one-size-fits-all formula when it comes to parenting, there are a few tips that each parent can use to enrich their parenting journey.

  1. Boost your child’s self-esteem

Children start developing a sense of self-esteem and self-confidence at an early age as they see themselves through their parents’ eyes. Your words of appreciation, your tone of voice, your praises will make them feel capable and strong.

Similarly, words of discouragement like comparing them to other children and discouraging them will make them unsure of themselves and insecure. While speaking to a child, use a nourishing, appreciating tone. Even when they do something wrong, explain things politely to them.

  1. Discipline is the key

Discipline is important in every household. The goal is to help kids understand how giving in to immediate gratification is not possible. They need to learn self-control and grow into responsible adults.

Some small rules, to begin with, are no TV until homework is done or fast food allowed only once a month, etc. having a system in place helps. If they don’t abide by the rules, they get punished like less pocket money. Be consistent with your rules to set a good example in front of the kids.

  1. Make time for your kids

Being stuck between work, household chores and other responsibilities, it’s often difficult for parents to take out time for their children. But kids who don’t get enough attention from their parents often do not develop an emotional bond with them. This leads to insecurities, miscommunication and broadens the generation gap.

Assign one day in a week to spend with your children and form a special bond with them. Listen to their stories and share your own!

  1. Communication is a priority

Children have a lot of questions about every possible topic. If you don’t answer them, they will go find those answers elsewhere, and the source might not always be credible. Talk with your children about different topics. Answer their questions and share your knowledge with them. You never know, you might learn something new, too!

  1. Know your limitations

You cannot be a perfect parent, no one is. And the best part is that you don’t even have to be! Utilize your strengths and understand your weaknesses. It’s okay if you aren’t able to focus on every aspect of your child’s development, you don’t have to revolve your entire life around your child. Focus on your other commitments, too.

For instance, when you’re not around, hire a Nanny to take care of your child. However, be extremely careful while choosing a Nanny. Invite their resume, assess their profiles thoroughly, interview them and hire them only if you think they will be a good caregiver for your child.

Raising a careful, respectful and disciplined child is the result of hard work. But it’s something that’s necessary, and possible. Not to forget, it is one of the most rewarding jobs.
