Opportunities and Challenges in Deep Offshore Exploration

In the last several decades energy exploration has made tremendous progress. Advances in technology are facilitating activities such as subsea asset integrity management processes; it has also enabled energy exploration companies to go deep into waters with offshore drilling or underground for natural gas using fracking techniques. As the oil and natural gas reservoirs get depleted on the ground it has become necessary to find locations that have not yet been explored. Many large energy producers have established special units to perform research regarding feasibility of going to these uncharted territories in search of oil or natural gas.

While it is more challenging to go into these uncharted territories it is still necessary to continue to explore them. For one, the world’s energy resources are being drained at an increasing rate due to high appetite and demand from developing countries. On the other hand, alternate sources of energy are not yet able to meet this high demand. Energy producers have no choice, but to explore all avenues in search of oil and natural gas. Deep offshore drilling holds important promise for many.

The opportunities presented by offshore exploration are quite significant. Because majority of the offshore areas have not yet been explored there is potentially large amount of energy that remains untapped. Whoever can find and extract it stands to reap tremendous benefit. Deep offshore drilling is also done in a remote area, which means it will have less impact on human beings in case of accident.

While offshore drilling holds significant opportunity and promise it is not without challenges. It is extremely difficult to pinpoint locations in offshore where oil can be found. It takes considerable effort, time and money to find those locations. Even after you have identified the location setting up drilling in the middle of the ocean is no easy task. In addition, maintaining the facility throughout the year requires careful planning and execution. oil exploration safety is one of the most important requirement for any such projects.

Deep offshore exploration continue to be important for most energy producers despite the challenges. Opportunities presented by it and the need for energy from developing countries will mandate them to go to uncharted waters.
